My work is inspired by the shapes of musical instruments, which are altered by opening, painting, and combining with various objects. I'm fascinated by the juxtaposition of natural and manmade objects and the opportunity to tell stories through assemblage art.
Each piece features a poem mounted on the back of the violin.
My life changed the day I discovered the work of Joseph Cornell, American assemblage master. I wanted to be an artist, but there was one problem: I can’t draw!
My last formal art course was in 7th grade, and it ended with my teacher suggesting that I consider another elective. It was many years later when I discovered that there are other ways to create art besides traditional drawing and painting.
Collage and assemblage opened worlds within me, and I altered everything from chairs to typewriters.
Released from the tyranny of a blank canvas, my creative spirit awakened from a long hibernation, hungry to create.
I joined an artists’ collective in Portland OR showing assemblage pieces built into clock cabinets and desk drawers.
Rummaging through a flea market I saw an old, beat-up violin and thought, hmm.
This collection has been a few years in the making, and is always growing and changing as pieces leave for their new homes and I try new approaches and techniques.
